When you are pregnant, family, friends and even strangers love to predict the gender of your baby. There are many old wives tales that look at things like whether your baby bump is high or low, when you experience morning sickness, and even your hair shininess. A quick google search will bring up many results about how your desires will change depending on whether you are pregnant with a boy or a girl, and that is what I will focus on this blog. So, really meaning every hidden for your pregnancy cravings?
For generations, stories have circulated that if you pay attention to your pregnancy cravings, you will be able to determine the gender of your bub. It is said that if you're craving sweet foods such as chocolate, fruit and milk, you've got a girl in the street. If you feel like you can not get enough salty foods, such as chips or pizza, expecting a boy! Although that may be what your grandmother told you, what the research say?
Well, not much! While some have been made to interview women about cravings they experience and their thoughts on what it means, there are no reliable studies into potential links between food cravings and gender prediction. That is not to say that you desire nothing but if you're interested in finding out the sex of your baby, you're probably best to book in for an ultrasound, which after 16 weeks.
One interesting study of women in their second trimester of pregnancy found that 13% believe that they know the gender of their baby based on their food cravings. While women in the study hoping for a girl, the mother who has a university degree are more likely to want a boy. Although the researchers did not follow through until they give birth mum, so we do not know whether the woman is or not in their predictions, we know that more women crave salty foods during pregnancy, from sweet foods ... so if we rely on food cravings, we expect a tad more babies from the moment we saw!
Although it is about women experiencing them, we still do not have a definitive reason why cravings exist. However, the majority of health care professionals believe that they are most likely the result of hormonal changes or malnutrition.
Pregnancy and hormones go hand in hand and they can cause some crazy things happen to your body. If you have morning sickness, you may notice a taste and smell that might result from hormone - for example, you used to love a plate of scrambled eggs for breakfast each morning, but now just thinking about it makes your stomach turn! The same thing happened in the case of your pregnancy cravings, which is why you may find yourself obsessed with food that you never even liked before. Hormonal changes can also wreak havoc your emotions, so the desire for comfort fatty foods may be some emotional eating comes into play.
malnutrition is another logical explanation, to ensure that you and your baby get all you need for a healthy pregnancy. The desire for certain foods may be your body's way of telling you where your nutritional gaps. For example, if you suddenly find that you would kill for a steak, you may be lacking in iron. Another common desire is salty foods, your body that may indicate that you need to drink more water, salt helps to make you more thirsty and help your body to retain more fluid. So, make sure you eat a varied diet full of fresh vegetables, fruits and healthy fats to ensure you get all the nutrients your body needs.
