I hate things that are pretty.

You hate mashed potatoes for as long as you can remember. But now that you're pregnant, you eat them for breakfast. With hot sauce. And sour cream. What the hell is causing this strange cravings? The jury is still out, and experts do not know for sure if it was hormones or lacking nutrients that cause cravings. Either way, it's really OK to indulge once in a while ... as long as you desire is actually, um, food.

Some pregnant women crave extra-weird, the stuff of non-food items, such as soil, clay or paper, and this may be a sign of malnutrition. "Doctors use istilah'pica'untuk reflect the will and chewing substances that have no nutritional value," said. "Craving and chewing ice (pagophagia) is often associated with iron deficiency, with or without anemia, though the reason is not clear." So, if you desire dirt to dinner, talk with your doctor. But if you're craving watermelon, by all means indulge.

We surveyed 17 real women about their pregnancy cravings, from fairly common (peanut butter) to super weird (... cigarette butts?).

"pierogies and only pierogies. Of course, I use pregnancy as an excuse to eat everything and anything I wanted anyway. It was summer and there was ice cream almost every day, but it's probably more about my general love of ice cream from about specific pregnancy cravings. " -. Anna H

"So this is quite strange. I want to chew cigarette butts. Smoking is not real, just the end of a slick that normally reside in one's mouth. I never did, thank God, but I really wanted. Apparently, I have a form of pica are derived from iron deficiency. I opted for the numbers on the ice chips, which is much safer and less disgusting. " -. Alexandra T

"Peanut butter ... in any form. Cups, pieces, pies, icing, right out of the jar ... whatever! I swear my son loves peanut butter so much because he had it in the womb pretty much every day. " -. Melissa G

"Ice. I just want to chomp over crushed ice. I later found out that it could be a sign of anemia-and then find me quite anemic. " -. Jessie B

"The vaguely embarrassing, but when I was pregnant with my first child, I wanted was a chicken wing. I want them saucy and spicy, and I want to eat them with empty hands. Actually, now that I think about it, my child does not love chicken wings now so obviously the effect on her! " -. Jillian Q

"Whatever sour and pungent. I really want a margarita, but obviously it was not possible, so I mostly stuck with sour gummy worms. Also, many queso and guacamole. Maybe my body is telling me to get more protein? Who knows. the heart wants what the heart wants. " - Rachel S

"I'm a dietitian, so it is good enough to make sure I get what we both needed .. However, there is a stretch of two weeks in the first tri me where I eat melon like it's going out of style , probably because I need vitamin C (and this is my fruit is not often interested in). In the third trimester, I want to drink milk, not something that I do much as adults, and it makes sense since the third trimester is when the baby weight mineralizing bone. "-. Rachel C

"I'm usually not a big carnivore but what I want is meat! Spaghetti Bolognese (with a side of meatballs), In-N-Out Burger (every day-my office is across the street and nice people behind the counter know my order) and, perhaps strangest of all, vanilla ice cream with beef bits jerky above (on the day I was desperate and it was the only meat I have around!). The latter turned out to be an odd combo delicious salty / sweet, although I tried it once when I was not pregnant and realize that the couple was just something that pregnancy can bring. " -. Mae K

"I crave Taco Bell (along with lainnya'pedas'makanan) all the time. Whenever we discuss lunch or dinner option, Taco Bell is always the first thing I thought. Fire Sauce is the key, not light, heat or Diablo, it should fire. Sometime during the second trimester we devote an entire drawer in the kitchen to Fire Sauce package so that we always have it on hand. Taco Bell got me through the pregnancy. Just kidding ... kinda. "I like turkey, but straight Boar Head deli meat, not grilled (which should you decrease during pregnancy as listeria). I do not give up, and it was torture. I also have to have a mini tortillas with American cheese before I go to bed every night. (Which, by the way, helped so much with nausea.) "-. Dabee K

"All I eat is watermelon. Three whole watermelon week. Sometimes when my husband was not home, and all I wanted was a watermelon, I went to the store and lugging them home alone. On weekends, I would take him to the farmers market to bring them to me. When my baby was born, I tried to give the watermelon and he makes funny 'not interested' face. " -. Alana C

"I can only drink water very cold Essentia. Everything else makes me nauseous. And I ate the whole package of meat (nitrate free) in my first trimester in one sitting. I live on the fruit mixture, scrambled eggs and chocolate. What I really want though is an Italian sub, beer and bagel with nova for nine months. I eat Italian subs for a full week after the birth. "When I was pregnant, especially in the first trimester, I had a mad craving for oranges and lemons. As in, I would absolutely quarter lemon and bite into them like they were orange slices. bitterness did not bother me much at the time and it became part of my routine breakfast before work: citrus followed by a slice of lemon. The irony is that now my 16-month old would not try either. " - Rachel B

"Mango EVERYTHING .. Frozen, dried, fresh, juiced ... I could not get enough. I'm worried that my baby will come out orange because I've eaten some form of mangoes every day for the last nine months. Secondly, I have always refused to tomatoes and could only eat them if they are in the sauce (and even then ... it has to be super smooth-no chunks). But I was pregnant obsessed with whole roasted tomatoes. I'm not ready to bite into a raw yet, but this is a big step for me and one I hope takes place post-pregnancy. I suspect that my body super vitamin C deficiency or something, because both these cravings have been out of control. " -. Alexia D

"The first trimester I ate only peanut butter and jelly on white bread. The second and third trimester, I eat two apples and Skippy peanut butter cream every day. "I eat a box and a box of cereal every night. First, the Lucky Charms, and then I on Kix kick. I had to go to a ton of stores because not everyone took it. I was so obsessed, my colleagues bought my cereal for Christmas! " -. Katie L

"What I want is a beer. I even tried non-alcoholic to see if that would curb my desire, but no go. Finally, at 39 weeks in August, in 100-degree weather, I had a Peroni while at dinner at our favorite Italian restaurant in Brooklyn.
