Causes and Treatments of Heartburn During PregnancyCauses and Treatments of Heartburn During Pregnancy

If pregnancy gives you heartburn, you want to stop, now. Here are five ways to extinguish the fire, so you can relieve heartburn during pregnancy.

This is heartburn that keeps me in the end. I could take the swelling, which, constant trips to the bathroom, itchy skin, fatigue, sweating, sleeplessness and even the psychological shock of seeing the end of the scale 200 pounds. But the constant, burning pain of heartburn makes miracle of pregnancy seem more like a curse in the middle of my third trimester, my mantra has changed from "Please, let her be healthy!" to "Just get him OUT!"

It was a fiery sensation known as heartburn that occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) muscle that is responsible for keeping the stomach contents in their place, started to relax or leaking. This allows stomach acid to flow up into the esophagus, explained Suzanne Trupin, MD, CEO of Women's Health Practice Champaign, Illinois. Also known as acid indigestion or reflux, heartburn showed around 50% of pregnancies in the 2nd and 3rd trimester, usually after a meal or before bedtime. Feelings can range from uncomfortable to excruciating

Pregnant women are prime candidates for two reasons :. First, -Busy limbering up joints and connective tissue for easier delivery-slow down your digestion, which means the food stays in your stomach longer and trigger the production of more acid. Second, your baby is growing pressure on both the stomach and the LES, increasing the likelihood that the acid will be pushed into the esophagus.

So how does a pregnant mother relieve heartburn during pregnancy? Follow these five tips to ease the pain:

Too much worsen heartburn, says Rachel Brandeis, M.S., a registered dietitian in Atlanta who specializes in. "When you are pregnant, there is little room for your stomach to expand," he said. Maintaining a sensible diet will not only prevent heartburn in the short term, but during pregnancy as well as gain more than recommended pressure put on weight more on your stomach, which can trigger the condition. Instead of three meals a day, aiming to six mini-meals (See "Meal Plan" below) is not more than 1 ½ cup of food each, Brandeis recommends. small meals is easier for your body to digest, helping to relieve the symptoms of heartburn during pregnancy.

Identify foods that intensify heartburn and drive them out of your diet. While there is no universal "prohibited" foods, trigger heartburn commonly include acidic foods, such as citrus fruits and tomatoes, greasy or fried foods, spicy foods, chocolate, coffee and carbonated drinks (which, as you know, you have to eliminate anyway !).

"Liquid-y foods tend to cause problems of solids, as they move through the stomach faster," said Brandeis. Food ,, yogurt, milkshakes, protein shakes and puddings is a good choice. Look for fluid that offers plenty of protein, such as milk and yogurt drink. and aims to create a solid little less so: "chew solid foods slowly and very good, until they almost liquid," Brandeis added. Keep in mind, however, that drinking large amounts of fluids with meals can aggravate heartburn, because drinking can cause you to swallow more air. If you feel thirsty during a meal, drink a small sip between bites of food.

To avoid night heartburn during pregnancy, do not eat anything for at least three hours before bedtime. Elevate the head of your bed by placing books under the legs, and if you do not sleep on your left side, from now; Stomach acid would have to travel uphill to reach the esophagus-is not easy! Pregnant women also should not lie down or bending over after meals.

It is fine to find relief in a bottle of Tums or Rolaids or other calcium-containing antacids. However, "too much calcium can block the absorption of iron, so it does not take Tums at the same time you are taking you," Brandeis suggested. Also, avoid antacids that register aluminum (such as aluminum hydroxide or aluminum carbonate) as an ingredient; it can even be toxic in large doses. Drugs containing aspirin (such as Alka-Seltzer) should also be avoided during pregnancy; looking salicylic or acetylsalicylic acid in the ingredients list. You do not want antacids containing sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) or sodium citrate, either. Both are high in sodium, which causes water retention.

Here is an example of what is today worth of small, healthy food looks like:

1 cup of oatmeal with skim milk and 1 apple

1 cup yogurt with fruit

½ peanut butter and jelly sandwich and 1 cup of vegetable soup

1 handful of wheat crackers and 1 ounce of hard cheese of your favorite

2 ounces of chicken, ½ cups mashed potatoes and ½ cup of cottage cheese with fruit
