What pregnant women crave? We surveyed BabyCenter mom, and nearly 40 percent said, "Give me something sweet." Slightly fewer (33 percent) prefer salty snacks. Fans of Mexican food and other spicy dishes was third (17 percent). Trailing (10 percent) are those who crave citrus fruit, green apples, and lip-wrinkles tart or acidic foods.
What's it all mean? Here's what the experts say:
About half of women in the United States reported at least one food craving during pregnancy, said Judith Brown, author of What to Eat Before, During, and After Pregnancy. And those cravings are not all pickles and ice cream. They often run the gamut.
BabyCenter mom said he wanted pickles wrapped in cheese, salsa spooned straight out of the jar, and yes, even steak fat. And where on the spectrum of sweet, salty, spicy, and sour passion not a woman to the black olives on Sara Lee cheesecake lie?
Another mother told us she ate a steady diet of Cheez Whiz sandwich, which he is now (after the baby) could not bear to look. Eggplant, particularly on pizza, was another obsession pregnant women.
Many of these desires seem to come out of nowhere, and they can feel overwhelming. What causes them? Hormones, right?
Maybe some, says Elizabeth Somer, author of Nutrition for a Healthy Pregnancy. Extreme hormonal changes women go through during pregnancy can have a big impact on taste and smell. (This helps explain why women going through menopause may also experience strong food cravings and aversion.) But the bottom line, says Somer, is that no one knows for sure.
One thing we do know is that aversion and food cravings go hand in hand. In an Ethiopian study, women who have an aversion food more than twice as likely to crave foods than those who did not. And in a study at the University of Minnesota, Judith Brown found that pregnant women - as we asked - prefer sweet to salty flavor
Some nutritionists and health care providers believe that certain significant desire .. As for example, some experts think that the desire of large amounts of ice and substance non-food, such as starch laundry and dirt or clay (a condition called), is associated with a deficiency of iron or zinc, although there is not enough research to support the cause and effect relationship ,
San Francisco midwives and herbalists Cynthia Belew said some food cravings may be worth paying attention to. For example, alternative medicine practitioners believe that a deficiency can lead to a desire for chocolate. Foods that contain magnesium include whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, and leafy green vegetables such as spinach.
Belew also found that many patients need more in their diet. When they start taking fish oil or flax oil, their food cravings disappear.
Similarly, the desire for red meat seems like a transparent cry for. And mothers in our survey which he consumed in large quantities of peaches may have been responding to the needs of the body's beta-carotene.
Brown agree that in some cases there may be a biological cause for cravings. He pointed to a pregnant woman who develops an aversion to certain foods or beverages that may be harmful (like ,, or).
Somer, on the other hand, do not see a lot of link between cravings pregnant women and what his body needs.
"People think their intention is significant, but studies have shown no correlation between cravings and nutritional needs," he said. "If people crave what your body needs, we will all be eating more broccoli and less chocolate."
And at this point the evidence - while it's hard to ignore -. Is anecdotal
"There is no scientific explanation for food cravings. There is no data that says that what womanizer relate to something the body or the baby's needs, and there are no data to support that the typical pregnancy food cravings dangerous, well, "said Brown.
In the end, the experts we consulted agree that you have to pay attention to your pregnancy cravings -. pamper people healthy and come with
"Most cravings and aversion are more interesting than the serious and, for the most part, can be dissolved in moderation," says Somer. "A healthy diet is one that meets your nutritional and emotional needs as well as your preferences."
He recommended that pregnant women humor their desires rather than fight them by substituting low-fat frozen yogurtfor ice cream, for example. candy desire sometimes the result of a decrease in blood sugar, so eat small, frequent meals also roadside assistance who wish to indulge in desserts
Another way to curb unhealthy appetite. Eat breakfast every day (skipping breakfast can make a bad craving), get a lot, and make sure you have.
If you find yourself craving non-food items, such as starch, chalk, flour, dirt, or a large amount of ice, mention to your doctor. Some studies estimate that more than a third of pregnant women have the same passion. Due to some non-food cravings can affect your health, it is important to mention them to your provider
