One of the questions I am most often asked by women with PCOS who ultimately is pregnant, "How should my diet change now that I'm pregnant?" I really can understand the need to ask questions. It's taken forever falling pregnant and now you, you want to do everything in your power to keep your small pea to 9 months ahead you will have a wonderful, magical crying baby sleep in your arms.

So, I will provide some information based on my own experience and some of the research I have done. But before I do, I just want to remind you that I am not a doctor and if you have any questions at all about diet or pregnancy, you need to talk to your doctor.

Diet is very important for every woman who is pregnant, whether they have polycystic ovary Syndromeor not. Your body provides all the nutrients needed for the little life to grow and thrive. You need to make sure that you create just the right environment for your child to develop. This role will not end the pregnancy but will continue until the child is not so little anymore.

I'm sure you've done some research about a potential pregnancy complications when living with PCOS. I'm going to break it to you but I have to warn you that it does not make for happy reading. There is some hope, though. You do not have to suffer from one of the complications and both of my pregnancies without complications beautiful at all. So, here goes:

This is a type of diabetes that is diagnosed while you are pregnant and often disappear after the baby is born. It is often treated through diet and exercise or with medication if necessary ().

This is when your blood pressure is too high, especially after the 20th week of pregnancy. It can affect the kidneys and other organs and symptoms include :. Suddenly increased swelling in the hands and feet, headache, and increased blood pressure ()

Many women with PCOS also have a baby who was born the term pre (I both 2 weeks late) ,

So, as I said, it does not make for happy reading. You have to wait for long for this little guy and now you could be faced with a rocky pregnancy. Well, there's good news and this is not the end of the story.

One of the really interesting part of my research comes in is the one that compared women with PCOS and those who do not but they fit the age and weight as well (). What the research shows is that many of the complications above may not be directly associated with PCOS but to weight women. Being overweight leads to all these complications as well. Women with PCOS are slim, do not suffer from this complication.

So, there's even more reason to get the symptoms of PCOS and weight under control before you become pregnant.

Okay, so you've fought long and hard for this baby. Now, how you can give them the best start possible to eat well?

As we have said, your diet is very important during pregnancy and PCOS you still play a role and need to be considered. There are some elements that need to be considered.

If you are overweight with PCOS and have followed some kind of a calorie-controlled diet prior to falling pregnant, you may have some questions about how many calories you need. Well, you may be eating for two but it does not mean you have twice as many calories. If you are a healthy weight, you do not need to have extra calories during the first trimester, about 300 extra calories per day during the second trimester and 500 calories in the last trimester. You and your baby needs energy and calories for all of the growth occurring ().

Your protein intake also increased slightly during pregnancy. The type of protein you eat is also really important. You want to aim for a good quality protein. If you eat animal protein, the best kinds of meat to go is grass fed organic meats. It is more expensive but it is the healthiest type of meat. If you can not afford or can not get access to it, try to organic meat.

Also, oily fish such as salmon is a good source of protein and Omega 3 so try to include in your diet. One serving a week is fine. Be careful of shellfish, marlin and swordfish.

Another great advantage of having a good quality animal protein is that it is also a good source of iron and will help to avoid anemia are often prevalent during pregnancy later.

The fat that is really important for the health of our own hormones, and growth of your baby. brain and nervous system of your baby is made mostly of lipids and is also important for eye development (4). It is really important that you eat a good healthy fats from sources such as avocados, nuts, coconut oil or milk and eggs. You should also think about taking Omega 3 supplements.

The standard recommendation for healthy women is 170g per day of carbohydrates during your pregnancy (4). If you have followed the PCOS diet relatively low in carbohydrates, you should think about increasing the amount of carbohydrates you have per day.

Just a word of caution. PCOS you are still very real even if you are pregnant and your body is still having trouble processing carbohydrates so you need to make sure that you make a good decision in terms of the type of carbohydrates you eat. Carbohydrates with a low glycemic load is important when you are pregnant. You can get your daily carbohydrate needs of healthy vegetables or gluten-free sources of grains and legumes. Some of these beans, brown rice, quinoa, lentils. I would still recommend avoiding refined carbohydrates such as pasta, white bread and pastries.

We know that milk should be avoided as part of our PCOS diet (see article for more on why). However, during pregnancy women are susceptible to candida and yeast infections. During the last pregnancy I sprue for 8 weeks and it was really fun! One way to overcome this is to ensure you have a good probiotic yogurt. I often have Greek yogurt with a little honey to ward off the infection. The fermentation process destroys some help IGF-1 that is safe enough for PCOS. Also, try to ensure you have an organic yogurt.

Supplements are also an important aspect of a healthy pregnancy. You should check with your doctor to ensure that you take the correct dose and type of supplement. It is a supplement that I took during my pregnancy.

So, let's sum up the diet PCOS new pregnancy you

If you become pregnant while you are reading this, I hope that pregnancy the most magical! If you are still waiting for your little miracle, I wish you a very short wait. If you hold your small miracle, I wish you all the joy that entails a mother!

A balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables and lean protein is better for you and your baby grows, food to avoid fish high in mercury, too much caffeine, alcohol, you have to heat up lunch meat , cooked / raw meat and foods that are not pasteurized. During the first trimester you do not need the extra calories, during the second and third you need to eat an extra 300 calories per day. When I was pregnant with my second child, I was determined to avoid pre-eclampsia again and follow the beer diet for pregnant women. My first was £ 9 7ozs 6 days early and my second was 6 £ 8ozs last two days of the due date.

Please is it safe for me to take tea? I just bought a pregnancy current organic tea - by traditional medicinals. Please advise ? Thanks again

Question: 8 weeks pregnant here, confirmed PCOS, not on any medication or diet super special, but it took some time. Anyway, with my last child makes almost no milk, nursing and pumping like crazy with just a teaspoon to prove it. Is there anything I can do right now to set me up for success? Etc. to promote milk supplement, or get my body ready to produce it? Thank you! Your site has really helped!

Hi, I was wondering if you ever got a response to this question? I would love to hear feedback like that might help me 🙂 Thanks!

Hi,

My little guy has been eating issues and my milk supply finally dropped quite badly. After many hours spent with the doctor and lactation consultant recommended many additional pumping and taking supplements, I doubled the supply. To answer the question Meg ... ASI's mainly a matter of supply and demand. Make sure that your little one eat at least every 2 hours (or you're pumping) at first it is important to establish a good milk supply. There are also some supplements and foods associated with increased milk supply, including: fenugreek, steel cut oats, tea and milk (which contains a lot of fenugreek Note :. Check with your doctor before taking supplements or herbal alternative / drugs.

Good Luck!

Dear Tarryn,

I want to thank you for this website and your efforts to make this. As wonders I happen to follow your diet plan. yes, I am five weeks pregnant after more than four years of struggle, my question to u here I need to do to continue to take inositol 4g per day throughout my pregnancy or only up to 12 weeks .... ??? < p> Also can I download the spearmint tea during pregnancy. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Thanks again and God bless you always ...!

Hi ... I have experienced irregular periods for many years but only a few b ulan ago has been diagnosed with PCOS. (I am 34 now) that when I came across your blog. Immediately, I stopped eating diary and start making inositol. Two months later I found out that I was pregnant !! We are over the moon! I'm on your blog again look into whether I should continue taking inositol. You seem to know more about PCOS from my GP: ((Thank you very much for your blog ... xx

I enjoy reading your article I beat my infertility with exercise and healthy eating even though I didn '. T weight loss, however, I was 17 weeks along now and I've lost 13 pounds! I eat amazingly well and even has eased the burden of my work around the house, but I'm still dropping! I think it's because my hormones are not balanced before, but now they balance out and I lost weight and metabolism like other women. I have insulin resistance as a result of PCOS, so maybe this is the fix it for a while.

I just look back on this and laugh ! finally I lost 25 pounds of fat, have a healthy baby after only 5.5 hours, and then my hormones to our whack and I'm bigger! When I ride Januvia, however, I began to drop like flies. I now smaller than it was when I met my husband! He had to leave South Korea for a year when the baby was only 2 months old, and he comes back next month. What a crazy last year and a half!

Beginning taking inositol in December and just knew I was pregnant on February 5 🙂 I really did not expect this to happen so fast! But I am happy and excited !!! Have been going to the gym is still every day and I still take my inositol 😀

Hi Tarryn. I love your website. I have been pregnant by following many of your tips. I appreciate all that you have helped me with. I think I will have to take infertility drugs to get pregnant but did wonders with the use of vitamins and dietary changes. Thank you! I have a problem. I am currently trying to breastfeed and I did not produce enough milk .. Do you have any tips for this? I have tried everything that lactatithe specialist is recommended and it is still low.

hi I'm 14 weeks pregnant and had gestational diabetes become pregnant after a 6 year old daughter 6.5 years old and after a year she gave birth I found I had PCOS my weight no matter big for my facial hair My hair and body care are increasing day by day I was really worried about this hair and cannt focus on my pregnancy Pleasesssssseeee help me ................

I was wondering if anyone had complications within the first 5 weeks of pregnancy?

I just wanted to say thank you for all the work to me..I'm PCOS tips very grateful ..

Hi Tarryn I just wanted to share that I was diagnosed a year ago may have polycystic right ovary..The the good news is I was 10 weeks pregnant sekarang.dan I note that based on the latest ultrasound report me it is normal ovarian now..I'm just so happy ..

I am five weeks pregnant ! So excited because one year ago I had cysts on my ovaries ... PCOS I was very frustrated. I have been doing the Paleo diet (not a hard core Paleo, but mostly) since April and includes the exercise in June ... since then I have lost 25 pounds! I think this diet, getting acupuncture and weight loss is why I am now pregnant! In addition, I no longer have cysts on my ovaries.

Thanks for all your info in PCOS and be pregnant..I morning on the way and I love to learn from you all.

What is recommended for stomach pain? non-PCOS women can easily have crackers as part of their diet, but what is good to have on hand to help?

Tarryn, thanks. I had my (lean) PCOS confirmed in February this year after struggling to get pregnant. I found your site a few days after and read everything I could. I've eaten relatively healthy but cut diary and start taking low-dose inositol. I am now just over 9 weeks pregnant, so this article is what I need! I can not believe what a difference diet tweaks made just a few months.

I hope all will be well with your pregnancy!

Marion, just wondering if you had continued with Inositol since pregnant?

@Melissa I continue to 12 weeks and then stopped because it can cause problems if you take longer. But with 12 weeks embyro embedded into the lining of the uterus so it is much more likely to stay there. I am currently more than 30 weeks and things mostly go well. Because PCOS I developed gestational diabetes (GD) but this can be well controlled if you follow a PCOS diet and exercise anyway. I have to monitor my blood sugar, but not as scary as it sounds. When a baby is born GD almost always lost, so it's not a lifetime thing.

I unfortunately fell from PCOS eat wagon a few weeks ago. I'm 10 wks pregnant right now and so afraid of losing because of PCOS that I put myself back plan with protein and low in carbohydrates. Thanks to this, I had to return my butt in gear. I wish I did not do any damage because I was listening to my husband and Dr. upon ...

Tarryn since I have found your website, I have fallen in love yesterday marked the first day that I found out that I was expecting I read other topics about having expectations following some diet advice you Im feeling better thanks to this post because I hate to hear advice from people who do not even have experienced PCOS will definitely help me in my recent trip thanks a lot !!!! ! ❤❤❤❤

Congratulations Kiwilove! It was such amazing news! I hope you have the most magical pregnancy!
