Chances are that you are one of many pregnant women experience heartburn or burning rotating and acid indigestion. It usually hits somewhere in the second or third trimester, and can be miserable. If the symptoms do not improve after the above recommended dietary and lifestyle changes are in place, talk with your doctor about over-the-counter medicines. Antacids are available as chewable tablets and liquid. They work by coating the lining of the esophagus and stomach and neutralize stomach acid. heartburn drugs called H2-blockers work by reducing the amount of acid made by the stomach. Although most are considered safe in pregnancy, as with all drugs, it should be avoided in the first trimester.
Heartburn symptoms are usually mild and manageable. Tell your doctor if heartburn is severe, if you are vomiting blood, or dark-colored bowel movements. It is a sign of blood in your digestive tract. Fortunately, heartburn usually ends with the birth of your baby and your body back to its non-pregnant state.
