Cheese During Pregnancy: What's Safe and What's Not? When you're pregnant, your OB tell you all the things you -and soft, unpasteurized cheese right at the top of the list. As a doctor I ran down the list of no-nos noshing, I wondered, How bad can it be cheese is really for you? But being a goody-goody, by-the-book type I will not break the rule if it might jeopardize my little peanut. So I say buh-bye to beloved Brie, Feta and Queso Fresco.
Now after reading the terrible piece in The Daily Mail, I am very glad I did not take risks. Twenty-five-year-old mother-to-be Vanessa White from Las Vegas allegedly contracted tuberculosis after eating unpasteurized cheese from abroad, which caused her to go into premature labor. And now for the really sad news: She and her daughters eventually die. Because. From. Cheese!
How can someone die from milk? It sounds improbable, mind-blowing even. Well, it's really dangerous. Unpasteurized soft cheeses may contain harmful bacteria, including one which can cause fatal tuberculosis, and another one called, that can cross into and cause infections or blood poisoning in infants, or even.
If you do not know much about listeria, getting an education now! According to, the symptoms of listeriosis can take days or even weeks to appear and may include fever, chills, muscle aches, diarrhea, headache, neck stiffness, and loss of balance. Often infected pregnant women do not even feel sick, so they are passing the infection to their unborn babies without knowing it.
While Listeriosis is still quite rare in the United States (estimated that around 1,600 illnesses and 260 deaths occur each year in the US because of Listeriosis), the sad fact is that it really happened, and it will not seem all "rare" or "impossible" if it happens to you or one of your loved ones. Plus? Studies have shown that pregnant women are 10 times more likely to get than other healthy adults, and an estimated 14 percent of cases of Listeria in pregnant women.
No matter how fantastic creamy cheese is (and, boy, do I love them!), It's definitely not worth risking yours or your baby's life. But after the baby is born, you can let loose and fill their cravings with the girls very decent wine and cheese night
