What is heartburn and indigestion

Heartburn -.? Which actually has nothing to do with the heart - is characterized by a burning sensation in the throat after eating or in the chest behind the breastbone. It is caused by stomach acid coming in contact with the esophagus (food pipe on your way down). A valve at the bottom of the seal pipe from the top of the stomach when you do not eat, but when the valve is too relaxed, partially digested food and stomach acid sometimes make their way back up into the esophagus, causing irritation of the sensitive layer.

The main symptom of heartburn is a burning sensation in the chest. You may also experience a sour taste in your mouth or an unpleasant feeling that vomit rising in your throat.

Indigestion, also known as dyspepsia, is a general term for digestion-related pain or discomfort in the abdomen. Symptoms of digestive disorders including heartburn, excess gas, bloating, belching, and feeling too full after a normal meal.

Both heartburn and indigestion is a common condition during pregnancy and seldom require medical attention.

What causes heartburn and indigestion during pregnancy?

When you expect, hormones flowing through your body makes the muscles relax the digestive system, which slows digestion. Valve in your esophagus can open or leaking, allowing acid from the stomach flows upward. In addition, as your uterus grows, it pushes against the stomach, increasing the pressure on the valve.

The slowdown in the digestive tract can also cause more gas, which is the cause in flatulence and bloating. Your stomach has little room for your uterus to expand, so it feels fuller than usual.

How can I prevent heartburn?

Avoid eating or drinking things that pushes the valve in the esophagus to relax more. These include oily or fatty foods, chocolate, caffeine, carbonated drinks, tomato products, citrus juice, peppermint and spearmint, alcohol, onions, garlic, and spicy foods

Here are some other tips :.

If you are on medication, be sure to check if heartburn is one of the possible side effects. Your doctor may want to adjust your medication or dosage.

How can I prevent indigestion?

One of the best ways to minimize indigestion is to reduce the amount of gas in your body. Gas enters your system when you swallow air or form in your body when bacteria work on the food that is not digested in your gut. Although there is no way to eliminate the gas at all, here are some tips to keep in check :?

When I need to see a doctor

What if my symptoms are really those of a heart attack?

Call 911 if you suspect that the sensation is similar to heartburn could be a heart attack instead. Because both conditions can cause burning chest pain, pay attention to your symptoms. Signs that discomfort may indicate a heart attack, not just heartburn, include:

Fortunately, however, heart attacks among pregnant women is still very sparse, though the rate has gone up slightly in recent years. In addition, pregnancy itself may increase the risk of heart attack anal 3 to 4- fold, according to a 2008 study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
